New Delhi, Delhi, 19th of March, 2025 : Under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, an eight-member national media team from New Delhi visited Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya to assess the ongoing efforts under the government’s 100-day intensive TB elimination campaign. During the visit, the team interacted with key officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, State TB Officer, Ri-Bhoi District TB Officer, and traditional healers, to understand the progress and challenges in combating tuberculosis in the region.

Deputy Commissioner Ri-Bhoi, Abhilash Baranwal, highlighted Meghalaya’s proactive approach following the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for TB elimination by 2025. By engaging traditional healers and self-help groups, the state has been able to bring previously overlooked patients into the TB screening and treatment process. He further informed the media that nearly 10 percent of the hamlets in the district have not reported a single TB case in the past year, indicating significant progress in disease control.
The national media team comprising representatives from DD News, ANI, PTI, Amar Ujala, The Hindu, News 24 and News 18 will continue its visit in Shillong for the next two days, during which they will visit Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, primary health centers, and the State TB Office. The 100-day TB elimination campaign is part of the broader National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP) under the National Health Mission (NHM). It aligns with the National Strategic Plan (NSP) for TB elimination (2017–2025), which focuses on reducing TB incidence, enhancing diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and addressing the socio-economic impact of the disease. Spanning 347 districts across 33 states and union territories, the campaign aims to intensify TB case detection, reduce diagnostic delays, and improve treatment outcomes, particularly among vulnerable populations. This initiative is a critical step in India’s mission to eliminate TB and build a TB-free nation.
