New Delhi, Delhi, 26th of December, 2024 : Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh breathed his last in New Delhi today (26th December, 2024). Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, passed away while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-New Delhi at the age of 92 on December 26, 2024.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, Dr. Singh was a distinguished economist and statesman. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Economics from Panjab University in 1952 and 1954, respectively, and completed his Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge in 1957. He later obtained a D.Phil. in Economics from the University of Oxford in 1962.
Dr. Singh’s career was marked by significant contributions to India’s economic landscape. He served as the Chief Economic Advisor (1972–1976), Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982–1985), and head of the Planning Commission (1985–1987). As Finance Minister in 1991, he implemented pivotal economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy.
In 2004, Dr. Singh became the first Sikh Prime Minister of India, serving two consecutive terms until 2014. His tenure was noted for economic growth and efforts to improve India’s global standing.
