Nagpur, 23rd August, 2024 : Dr.BhimarayaMetri, Director, Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, the Guest of Honour, Mr. Vijay Phanshikar, Chief Editor, The Hitavada, and other dignitaries launched the book entitled Nurturing the Living Planet: Review of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, co-edited by Dr. Arun Kumar Rath&Dr.JibiteshRath, in the Institute campus.
While describing the book, Dr.Rath said that all thirty scholastic articles compiled under seven sections differ in context yet portray the factors associated with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He further said that it was a big challenge for the editors to shortlist articles received from around the country and finalize those that aligned with the book’s theme.
Although it was a challenging task initially, it became possible over time. Today, he is satisfied that the efforts and commitments have yielded results, and the book is beforehand.
In a brief introduction, Dr.Rath mentioned how accomplishing this book on 17 SDGs to include 30 articles by 42 authors, including Professors, Senior Civil Servants, Experts & NGO Heads, and the involvement of two Editor-Authors made it possible to bring the 546-page book in an effort spanning three years.
He further said that there is no plan B for Planet Earth. Therefore, we must ensure the Planet’s safeguarding for future generations. He emphasized that India can play a significant role in world peace as a Vishwaguru (global teacher), considering these goals are our own and enshrined in the Indian philosophy and nothing else. India always emphasizes the ‘One-World’ concept.
After the book launch, Dr.BhimarayaMetri said that such books are the need of the hour. Dr.Metri has written the book’s Preface and is also a co-author of one of the chapters. He mentioned the caveat of how almost 75 percent of the Plant’s natural resources have already been consumed so far; thus, an imbalance has already been witnessed. Therefore, the 17 SDGs are paramount in the current context, and we must understand that the Planet is not given to us by our forefathers but rather borrowed from our future generations; thus, saving it is our ardent duty. When the world talks about Sustainable Goals in the context of the damages done so far, it is the right time to take steps to sustain that to the best extent possible.
Espousing the untiring efforts of Dr.Rath, IIM Nagpur Director said that the esteemed editor(s) of the book has been discussing Sustainable Leadership for decades and has taken several constructive steps on this crucial issue. All chapters are well connected in the current context of the world’s innumerable problems. The scholarly articles discuss possible solutions as well.
Dr.Metri also mentioned how NEP has ascertained talking about the 17 SDGs as they are essential for the sustainability of the human race and the Planet. It’s the right time that rather than following the West, India comes forward to the Leadership Role to show the world the path to sustainability.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Vijay Phanshikar, remarked that although the book has a high dose of technicality that makes it difficult for common readers, its vertical reading is possible because it has plenty of information that brings hope and optimism for fulfilling the 17 SDGs, therefore moving a step forward to save the Planet.
Undoubtedly, there is no Plan B for the Planet as there is no second Planet, but of course, there is ample scope for a Plan B to safeguard the world. Charity begins at home. Therefore, steps can be taken on personal levels, with every individual committing to preserving the Planet in whatever way possible to expect a significant metamorphosis on the global foray, he said.
He further said that this book is excellent for anyone interested in understanding the 17 SDGs and how they matter the most today. All chapters are independent in connotation yet well connected in the subject context. As Indian thoughts and philosophies propagate sharing values for global growth instead of cornering, there is a high scope for the Indian subcontinent to act and witness a significant change in global sustainability. The conclusion mentions that only 30 percent of 17 SGDs are achieved. This highly researched book alarms us to think and act.
Professor Prashant Gupta emphasized in closing remarks that we should pledge to work together to nurture the Planet and make it liveable. Professor DeepmalaBaghel, one of the authors, further explained the book’s theme, discussing Sustainability Goals and roadmaps. It is an excellent contribution to this vital area and is seminal for thinkers, scholars, and policymakers to think and rethink the 17 SDGs of the UN and take steps that must bring positive change. The central themes of No Poverty & Zero Hunger; Health, Education & Gender Equality; Water, Sanitation & Energy; Economic Growth; Industry & Reduced Inequality; Sustainable Cities & Responsible Consumption; Climate Action & Protection of Life; and Peace Strong Institutions & Partnerships are covered in the book. The book will certainly show a new path for global societies to take strategic action for the Planet’s safety to make global humane sustainability possible.
